Collapsed building leads to fine for company
The director of a refurbishment firm in Leicester has been fined following the collapse of one of the buildings it was working on, risking employee and public
health and safety.
Bukan Singh Hothi was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £7,500 in legal fees after pleading guilty to breaching
health and safety regulations at Nottingham crown court.
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned refurbishment companies to prioritise higher safety standards in order to avoid potentially life-threatening incidents such as this.
Cliff Seymour, inspector for the HSE, said: "The collapse of the building nearly resulted in tragic consequences as one of the workers was in the building and only just managed to get out in time."
A property development company in Surrey, SGB Services, was also recently fined a total of £10,000 after some scaffolding collapsed onto a street being used by pedestrians due to a negligence of
health and safety standards.
