Brown asbestos discovered in council building

A council building in Walthamstow has been closed down after of white and brown asbestos was found during an investigation.

The Waltham Forest Guardian reports that the find had to be reported to the Health and Safety Executive, which issued a prohibition notice on the building.

Until recently, the building had housed a team of council workers and was used to store files about people who use council services.

Su Manning, Waltham Forest joint unions health and safety convenor, told the newspaper that the "many corrugated roofs contain white asbestos".

"But there is also amosite [brown asbestos], I don't know how that has got there but it is worrying because people need access to those files," she added.

Brown asbestos is classified as potentially lethal and is more dangerous than its white counterpart.

A church in Port Glasgow recently had to be demolished after large amounts of asbestos were uncovered when a fire ripped through the building, reported the Greenock Telegraph.
