Brothers fined after health and safety failures
A pair of brothers have been fined a total of £13,000 after
health and safety failures were discovered at a construction site they were running.
Robert and Eric Murray were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive after Alan Hird, who was working on the Carlisle site, fell six metres onto a concrete floor in an accident.
As a result of the incident, Mr Hind's skull was crushed, leaving him deaf in one ear and blind in one eye.
He suffered 16 skull fractures, as well as breaking his jaw and a wrist and damaging a kidney.
Following the accident, Mr Hind had to have part of his skull removed and waited six months for a titanium plate to be inserted to protect his brain.
"There was nothing to protect my brain - just skin. I was worried to go out. I didn't like to be around lots of people in case I bumped my head."
Gee Construction was recently fined £10,000 after health and safety failings were discovered by inspectors.
