Brain damage was caused by health and safety failings

A man suffered brain damage because of health and safety failings at his place of work.

Nicholas Holmes was hit on the head by a panel saw while unloading a lorry.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that there had been no health and safety training regarding unloading of vehicles.

As a result, Joda Freight has been fined £5,000 at Glasgow Sheriff Court after the firm pleaded guilty to breaking the health and safety regulations.

HSE inspector Jean Edgar described the accident as "horrific" and said there will be "terrible consequences" for Mr Holmes and his family for years to come.

She added: "Haulage companies must make sure information is properly communicated between drivers in how a load is secured and strapped. Verbal messages through a third party may not be enough."

Last month, Robert and Eric Murray were fined a total of £13,000 after employee Alan Hind was left with permanent brain damage after falling six metres from a building.
