Biscuit producer fined for health and safety failures
A major British biscuit manufacturer has been fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £2,889 in costs after
health and safety failures were discovered.
A female employee - who asked not to be named - had two fingers severed in an accident while working on an industrial mixer for McVitie's producer United Biscuits at a site in Halifax, west Yorkshire.
When the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated the incident, it found that regulations had been breached by the firm.
HSE inspector Rachel Brittain described the health and safety failures as "unacceptable", explaining that the offences were worse because of the size of the company.
"Preventing access to moving parts and fitting guards is an elementary and essential precautionary measure and inexpensive," she said.
"By not putting these measures in place United Biscuits failed to fulfil its duty of care."
Some of the brands produced by the company include Jaffa Cakes, Go Ahead, KP, Twiglets and Hula Hoops, while it is also responsible for making McCoy's and Phileas Fogg crisps.
