Better health and safety needed in waste industry
The UK's waste and resource management industry needs to improve its
health and safety record, it has been claimed.
According to a new study by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), despite numerous initiatives to improve
health and safety, the sector still suffers from one of the highest accident and fatality rates.
Although 80 per cent of respondents to the CIWM's poll said their organisations took
health and safety seriously, the overall results showed that the industry needs to implement a better understanding of safety in the workforce.
"It is clearly a matter for concern that while many organisations report having robust
health and safety management systems, the evidence suggests that these are not having the desired impact," remarked Chris Murphy, CIWM deputy chief executive.
"The high levels of awareness among those surveyed should be commended, but this now needs to be reinforced with more and better guidance, good practice sharing, and a focus on embedding
health and safety in individual and team behaviour patterns across the wider organisational culture," he continued.
CIWM's report suggested that insurance companies could provide financial support to allow training to take place, with such companies also benefiting as reduced
health and safety incidents would minimise insurance claims.
