Bakery directors fined for health and safety failures
Two directors at a bakery have been fined after
health and safety failures such as exposed live wires were found during an inspection.
Genaro Saiano and Dejan Durkin, the directors at Bedford's DG Bakery, were prosecuted following the visit by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Inspectors served the directors with four improvement notices for other
health and safety failings, but the directors did not comply with these.
As a result, Mr Saiano was fined £3,000 and Mr Durkin £2,500, with each man forced to contribute a further £500 towards the cost of the court case.
HSE inspector Emma Rowlands said: "It is simply unacceptable to operate machinery with live wires exposed - someone could have been killed or suffered a serious injury."
She added that staff had been exposed to flour dust, which can lead to asthma and irritation to the nose and eyes.
According to the HSE, bakers are the second most vulnerable group to occupational asthma because of their close proximity to flour dust in the workplace.
