All businesses face health and safety risks
Businesses can never afford to become complacent where
health and safety is concerned, it has been claimed.
Michael Slade, managing director at Bibby Consulting and Support, said it is important to ensure business compliance in this area at all times.
He suggested that many companies with office set-ups are less likely to focus on health and safety than those working in primary and secondary industry.
But Mr Slade warned that all companies should ensure they conduct the necessary risk assessments appropriate to their premises and operations.
"The fact remains that there are still risks and you can still have serious accidents in almost any of those environments, including offices," he added.
"[For some businesses], there isn't really an incentive to do it until you're faced with the consequences of an accident. And the consequences can be pretty severe."
Figures published by the Health and Safety Executive last year revealed that the number of people killed in the UK workplace rose by 24 during 2010-11.
Some 171 individuals lost their lives in the course of their employment duties during the 12-month period, up from 147 in 2009-10, the body reported.
