£10k fine for company following health and safety error
A Telford packing firm has been fined £10,000 after
health and safety failures led to a worker losing three fingers.
The employee, who does not wish to be named, was helping a colleague to unblock a 130-tonne power press at I2R Packaging Solutions.
Although her colleague opened the guards that turn off the machine, there was still some energy stored in it, which resulted in a part of the machine lifting up at speed and severing the woman's index and middle fingers, as well as the tip of her ring finger.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Katharine Walker described the situation as an accident waiting to happen.
"While the machine had some protective guards and safety mechanisms in place, it seems they were not adequate to prevent danger to operatives during processes such as clearing blockages," she added.
Pinguin Foods UK has also been fined £10,000 after health and safety failings led to a man losing a finger in a crushing incident.
