Health and safety 'should not be undermined by politicians'
Health and safety legislation should not be taken lightly by politicians, the Trade Union Congress has urged.
General secretary of the organisation Brendan Barber said: 'The idea that employers are being over-zealous in their application of
health and safety regulation is simply not true.'
His remarks come in reaction to comments made by Conservative Party leader David Cameron, who claimed that if the Tories come to power in the forthcoming election he will look to cut down on the UK's 'over-the-top
health and safety culture'.
Mr Barber claimed Mr Cameron's comments were largely based on half-truths and myths learned from headlines in newspapers.
The country does not suffer from too much regulation, he said, adding that 35 years ago there were more than twice as many laws put in place for businesses to follow.
Furthermore, he cited examples such as the Morecambe Bay and Herald of Free Enterprise as disasters which have occurred since the
Health and Safety at Work Act was first implemented.
